Inheems is die Toekoms

Meer en meer mense begin om inheemse plante aan te plant. Die mees bekendste inheemse plante in ons area is fynbos en is ‘n skouspel van blomme in die winter.

Dit maak nie saak waar jy woon of hoe beperk jou spasie is nie, jy sal beslis ‘n inheemse plantjie kry wat vir jou sal werk. Inheemse plante is spesifiek aangepas tot ‘n area, grondtipe en klimaat. Die wonderlike ding is dat hulle ook kan aanpas in ander dele van die land.

Wanneer saailinge beskerm word in die vroeë stadium van ontwikkeling, in plaas daarvan om te veg vir oorlewing, sal hulle gewoonlik floreer in ‘n omgewing wat verskil van hul natuurlike habitat. Die Nasionale Botaniese Vereniging van Suid-Afrika bied advies en inligting aan die publiek oor inheemse plante wat tot voordeel is vir enige tuin entoesias.
Daar is streng wetgewing aangaande inheemse plant spesies, onderandere dat dit onder geen omstandighede uit die natuur verwyder mag word nie, selfs die sny van hul blomme en vang van hul saad is teen die wet. Plante op privaat grond mag slegs verwyder word met die eienaar se toestemming. Meeste inheemse spesies is beskermd en die ontwrigting daarvan verbied. Dieselfde reëls geld vir die saailinge. Wanneer jy ‘n saailing wil verwyder, moet jy ekstra versigtig wees om nie die wortels te beskadig nie. Dit word voorgestel om eers die plant water te gee, om so doende die grond sagter te maak. Die volgende wenk is om genoeg van die plandjie se eie grond saam met hom uit te haal, dit verminder wortel skade en help met hervestiging. Kenners beveel dit aan om die saailinge eers in ‘n pot te plant tot hy gevestig is en dan uit te plant. Moenie probeer om ‘n saailing hoër as 10cm te verwyder nie, op die stadium is die kans groot dat die wortelstelsel met verwydering beskadig kan word.

Inheemse plante kan van steggies af gegroei word, maar bied ‘n bietjie van ‘n uitdaging vir onervare tuiniere. Oorweeg dit eerder om gevestige plante by kwekery aan te koop. Entering the world of work

Getting a job after years of school or study initially seems like a pretty easy task: Find an advertisement, write a letter with your CV attached, include a large number of testimonials from lecturers, pastors and friends, and the job is yours!
Unfortunately, this is not so easy. Bear in mind that in South Arica, only about 20% of matriculants find jobs after school – leading to an extremely high unemployment statistic for young people. Even young people with post matric qualifications struggle to find jobs.

Entering the real world of real work is as much a marketing job as it is to sell a new product. A lot of preparation and thought need to go into the planning and execution of the job hunting process. Let us look at the general pitfalls that cause many applicants to not get the call for a first interview:

1 Failure to distinguish yourself from the next candidate
Unless you are extraordinarily lucky, the person who makes the decision about whether to invite you for an interview does not know you from a bar of soap. This means that you have to impress the decision maker within a very short time so that he/she reads your CV in detail. Reports indicate that this decision is made within the first 8 seconds of the person picking up your CV.

You have no choice but to put very careful thought into the first impressions that a potential employer forms of your correspondence. There must be something about your application that is different from all the other hundreds of applications!

2 Supplying too many facts, but too little real information
The employer seldom wants to know how many siblings you have, whether you were class leader in grade 6, or your achievements in badminton. What counts is whether you are reliable and able to do the job without requiring supervision all the time.
In a casual letter, such information may serve as an appropriate introduction. However, the potential employer has to read your CV and covering letter as part of a day that is stacked and packed with reading material from more important sources: Bank statements, customer replies, tender documents, supply contracts –therefore, if your application does not immediately grab the attention of the reader, your chances of landing an interview are very slim.

3 Failing to prove that you meet all the requirements of the position
Bear in mind that the potential employer is simply interested in finding someone who can do the job without too much supervision. He is very seldom interested in your skills on the sport field (unless the position is directly related to sport); if you were an athlete in your school or varsity days, list these in a brief paragraph at the end.
All advertisements list the basic requirements in terms of qualifications and skills; prove in your cover letter that you have these skills.
Yet, there is still more to prove: Carefully screen the job outputs listed – these may not relate directly to qualifications and skills, but will from the substance of the results eh is expecting from a successful candidate. Make sure that you understand these outputs, and show on paper that you are in fact in a position to deliver these results.

We recently moved to the Western Cape and more specifically Albertinia. Because soil is part of my life for the last 30 odd years, I was immediately amazed by the “white soil” (which is actually more pure sand) that you find in this part of the world.

With this article, I want to start a discussion about carbon in the form of biochar to build a healthy and productive soil. Biochar as a soil amendment is nothing new and definitely no gimmick. The benefits in using biochar as part of your plant feeding program are numerous but we will discuss that in more detail in future articles.

Biochar is in fact charcoal that is produced in a specific way to minimize volatiles and ash content. It is a natural, organic product that gets produced from biomass (plant material) in a process called pyrolysis that is an oxygen restricted process. The carbon structure of biochar is much more stable than the carbon structures that is found in raw organic matter, compost or manures and can therefore build the total carbon content (TCC) of soils for many years to come. By lifting the carbon content of your soil, you create a healthy environment for soil microbes to multiply, optimize the uptake of plant nutrients and better the water holding capacity of your soil, to name only a few.

In its pure form, biochar is a very light and dusty black powder and therefore difficult to handle and apply. To simplify the application, we formulated and manufacture an easy dissolvable pellet that can be mixed and applied with any standard fertilizer or on its own.

2015 is designated the International Year of Soils so maybe the time to start taking care of this precious but under enormous pressure natural recourse is now. By mixing biochar into your soil, compost, manures, growing medium or organic matter, you can start building a healthy soil (from the white sand) to grow a beautiful garden or produce healthy and tasty vegetables and fruit.
